Hand Tied Tapered Leaders

We began making these for our own use a few years ago after being disappointed with the various manufactured leaders of the day. When customers asked what leader we used, the next question would often be why don't you have them for sale, so we had to start offering them. Along the way, we developed a unique method of tapering and trimming the blood-knots to make them less obtrusive, which is a frequent complaint with knotted leaders. No chemicals, heat, lubricants or saliva are used in welding the knots, but we think you'll be pleased with the results, no matter how we do it. Every leader is tied by Jerry Doak and every section is carefully measured and inspected to ensure the highest quality and consistency.

For darker rivers like the Miramichi, we use Maxima Chameleon which many salmon fishermen prefer for its abrasion resistance, excellent knot strength and just the right amount of stiffness to ensure a powerful turn over and great fly presentation. For rivers with clear water, we also offer a more translucent option made with Maxima Ultragreen material. Whichever option you choose, we're confident you'll see why these have become our best selling leaders by a Miramichi mile.

By the way, we don't recommend using anything made of rubber to straighten these leaders, as you can easily build up excess heat which can damage the material. Just anchor the looped end securely, hold the leader tightly and rub your hand down the entire length. Your palm will develop just enough heat to straighten it out perfectly.

Maxima Leader Material
About 45 years ago, my father first encountered Maxima through a salesman with DFS in Toronto. He introduced it to the Miramichi at a time when tippet materials were notoriously week and inconsistent. We spent a lot of time over the counter demonstrating Maxima's remarkable knot strength and, before long, anglers came to recognize Maxima's combination of stiffness and abrasion resistance as being ideally suited for salmon fishing applications. It has been a favourite on the Miramichi ever since.
